Doldrums

It rained
and we
didn’t
do a thing about it.
What could we do?
What is there
to do
then?
It rained and we let it rain.
The sky was pink
and how could it
not be?
How could the sky not be
pink?

Yes
there was
something
nightmarish
in the way those lights
across the parking lot
flashed on and
off.
I’ll admit that. There was something terrible in the clouds.
In the windows of the hospital
the
walls
pounded the walls pounded
the walls.
And what did we do?
Pounded back.
Pounded too.
Ate sandwiches and
drank coffee.
Talked about mothers and
their bogs and their
prayers and their
sicknesses.
Moved like elephants
into sleep,
elephants on the
Serengeti.

But well, then
almost too well
it rained.
And I’ve really almost had it.
